2027: South-South ADC Leaders Refute Endorsing Amaechi’s Presidential Bid

The South-South zonal leadership of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has firmly denied claims that it endorsed former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi for the party's 2027 presidential ticket. In a statement issued on Saturday, February 28, 2026, South-South Zonal Publicity Secretary Mabel Oboh described the reports as misleading, undemocratic, and a distortion of political reality. She emphasized that no endorsement occurred during or after a recent meeting held on February 27 at the residence of Chief John Odigie-Oyegun in Benin City. The gathering brought together respected party elders, senior stakeholders, and representatives from Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa, Cross River, Delta, Edo, and Rivers states. Its primary purpose was to strengthen internal cohesion, advance grassroots mobilization, and strategically position the ADC for upcoming electoral contests not to make premature endorsements.Oboh clarified that Amaechi, a prominent figure from the region, used the occasion to formally inform the leaders of his intention to seek the ADC's presidential nomination in 2027. She stressed: "Consultation is not endorsement, and courtesy is not coronation." No motion was moved, no resolution adopted, no vote taken, and no consensus reached on supporting any aspirant."The leaders did not endorse Amaechi or any other person as this will negate the principle of internal democracy," Oboh stated. She added that candidate selection remains the prerogative of the party's constitutionally recognized organs and members, not zonal consultations.Oboh defended Chief Odigie-Oyegun's role, noting it is inconceivable for a leader of his stature who has long championed democratic structures to undermine those processes. She criticized the media reports for lacking verification, warning that such misinformation can erode public confidence and heighten unnecessary tensions in a fragile political environment. The zonal leadership reaffirmed its unity, discipline, and full commitment to due process, urging the public to disregard any narrative suggesting an endorsement took place. This refutation follows earlier reports that interpreted comments from the meeting as an endorsement of Amaechi, amid speculation about potential contenders for the ADC ticket in the 2027 elections. Other party figures, such as Prof. Pat Utomi, have similarly stated that no endorsement discussion occurred.
