NSCDC Arrests 10 Students Over Banned 'Signed Out' Celebration in Adamawa

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has arrested 10 secondary school graduates in Adamawa State for participating in the banned final-year "Signed Out" celebration, which reportedly led to public nuisance, street fights, and other disruptive activities. In a statement issued on Friday by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, DSC Nyako Amidu Baba, the NSCDC said operatives from the Safe School Response Squad acted on credible intelligence. The suspects, linked to schools including Capital School, GDSS Demsawo, Doubelli, and Damilu, were allegedly involved in painting their bodies, tearing school uniforms, engaging in street brawls, and other acts that threatened public order.     The Adamawa State Ministry of Education banned the "Signed Out" tradition last year due to growing concerns from parents, school authorities, and the public over associated violence and misconduct. Despite the ban, this year’s events reportedly escalated, with some participants allegedly disguising themselves to rob members of the public of mobile phones and other valuables.    Preliminary investigations also revealed irregularities among those arrested: one suspect was wearing a school uniform but was not a student, while others were junior students (SS1 and SS2) rather than final-year graduates.    Adamawa State NSCDC Commandant, CC Nasiru Saleh, has ordered a thorough investigation to identify all involved parties and establish the full details of the incident. He emphasized the command’s commitment to maintaining a safe learning environment and preventing activities that disrupt academics or endanger students and residents. The NSCDC has vowed to strengthen collaboration with school authorities and other stakeholders while warning that it will not tolerate any actions that undermine public safety or peaceful academic activities.
