A man who collapsed at the finish line of the London Marathon held on Sunday has been reported dead.
According to the race officials, the 42-year-old, who has not been named, received medical attention after crossing the line in Sunday's race but later died in hospital.

A spokesman for the organisers said: "The organisers of the Virgin Money London Marathon would like to express their sincere condolences to the family and friends of the deceased.

"Our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with them at this difficult time."

It was gathered that the tragic incidis the first recorded death in the race since 2012, when 30-year-old Claire Squires collapsed a mile from the finish and later died from a cardiac arrest.

Her charity fundraising page has since donated almost £1m towards the Samaritans.

An estimated 36,000 people took part in yesterday's race, with more than 1,200 St John Ambulance volunteers lining the streets.

Temperatures of 11C were recorded at the start of the race in Greenwich at 10am, but as runners made their way around the 26.2-mile course the bright sunshine and lack of breeze made conditions feel considerably warmer.

Kenyan athlete Wilson Kipsang won the men's race while Edna Kiplagat from Ethiopia took the women's title.
