Remembering BIAFRA: Protesters protest in Czech Republic
« on: June 02, 2014, 09:35:59 PM »
Some 40 people took part in a march in memory of 3.5 million Biafrans who fell in the civil war in Nigeria in 1967-1970 staged in the streets of Prague today.

The participants demanded Biafra's independence and they protested against the Boko Haram Islamist sect that is fighting against the government in Nigeria. Most recently it drew attention by kidnapping over 300 Christian girls.

The southeastern Nigeria declared independence under the name the Republic of Biafra 47 years ago.

The Nigerian government brutally defeated the separatists who controlled the region with rich oil deposits after almost three years.

The number of victims of the conflict, in which Britain and the Soviet Union supported the Nigerian government, is not known to date but it is put at several million at least.

Some 40 descendants of the then Biafrans marched from Wenceslas Square in the city center across Old-Town square to the National Theatre on the Vltava  River embankment.
