Hundreds of students of the University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT) on Tuesday went on rampage blocking the busy East/West road and the Choba/Rumuokwuta road in protest of the gruesome murder of four of their colleagues last Friday.

The students, who defied appeals by the University’s authorities, made good their threat to protest the killing of their colleagues, who were beaten to death and set ablaze by the vigilance group from the Aluu community for alleged robbery.

The protest caused vehicular traffic jam on the road, forcing passengers to trek to their various destinations.

The students carrying placards and photos of their slain colleagues, called for justice. And if justice was denied, they vowed to retaliate the killing of their colleagues. Read More

Uniport Shut Down As Students Set Omuokiri-Aluu Ablaze
« Reply #2 on: October 09, 2012, 08:58:16 PM »
Students of the University of Port Harcourt, went on the rampage Tuesday  protesting the murder of four of their colleagues by youths in Omuokiri-Aluu community  last Friday and set ablaze no fewer than 12 houses in the community even as the university has been shut down by the school authorities.
Spokesman of the university, Dr William Wordi confirmed the closure of the school to the Vanguard on phone.  He assured he was going to send an official statement.  It was yet to come at the time of this report.
Students from other institution under  the aegis of National Association of Nigeria Students, NANS, stormed the university yesterday to mobilise  students in Port Harcourt to protest against the brutal killing of three of their colleagues and one other  by riotous youths in Omuokiri-Aluu community  last Friday.
The rampaging students blocked the East West road for several hours before allegedly marching to Omuokiri-Aluu community to start wrecking havoc. Community sources told the Vanguard that they torched about twelve houses.
Vanguard gathered that while the rampaging students were on the East West road, they reportedly insisted that they would only move out of the road after the Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof Joseph Ajienka had addressed them.  The Vice Chancellor reportedly obliged them after securing assurances that he would not be rough handled
Sources said while the Vice Chancellor came to plead with the students to shun any temptation to be violent some of the students immediately started hurling sachet water at him.
Vanguard gathered that it took the timely intervention of security operatives to whisk him away from the spot.  At press time, security operatives had been drafted to quell the situation.

Tears flowed freely as thousands of people from all walks of life Friday  gathered to pay their last respect to Master Lloyd Toku Mike, one of the four students of the University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT) who were murdered at Omuokiri Village, Aluu on Friday, October 5.

The remains of Lloyd was buried at the Port Harcourt Cemetery yesterday after a funeral service held at the No.6 Field, Niger Street, Old Port Harcourt Township.

It was a gathering of students from all the tertiary institutions in Rivers State, parents and siblings of the slain students and people who came to mourn victims of what they described as the most barbaric killings in the country.

At the service conducted by Salvation Ministries, Pastor Promise Jeremiah, while condemning the killings, urged people to put their houses in order by giving their lives to Christ like Lloyd did.
He also advised parents of the victims to put their trust in God for the wounds to heal.

Lloyd’s father, Toku Mike, restated that he was saddened at the loss of his son, whom he described as the pride of the family.
