Accident kill 20 as bus plunged into a river in Ogun State

At least 20 people died when a bus plunged into a river after the driver lost control on a busy road in southwest Nigeria's Ogun State, police said Saturday.

"Twenty people are confirmed dead, while three women survived and six people are believed to be missing following the accident yesterday along the Lagos-Benin expressway," state police spokesman Muyiwa Adejobi told AFP. He said the driver was speeding.

The state-run National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) said 12 bodies had been recovered while efforts were ongoing to retrieve the wreckage of the bus from the Ogbere river.

The bus had left Ota, near the commercial city of Lagos, early Friday and was heading for Benin city.
