Court Remands 3 Policemen, Driver In Prison Over Plot To Kill Delta Judge

Three police officers in Delta State charged for attempting to kill a serving judge in the state were on Friday remanded at the Warri Prisons.

Also remanded in prison custody with the policemen was the driver of the judge (name withheld).

Four of the accused persons were brought before the Magistrates’ Court II, Warri, Delta State in a charge No: MW/355c/2012. The suspects are Police Constable, Maka Godfrey, 29 years, Police Corporal Francis Okolie (30), Police Constable Asomuya Nicholas (28), Mathew Igbon, the driver to the judge (29) and another policeman, Paul Yadi, now at large.

The prosecution claimed that sometime in September 2012 at the Warri Magisterial District, the accused did conspire with one another to commit felony by writing a threat letter to kill and “thereby committed an offence punishable under Section 516 A (1) of the Criminal Code Law Cap C 21 Vol. 1 Laws of Delta 2006.”

In count two, the prosecution alleged that the accused “directly or indirectly caused a serving judge in the state (name withheld) to receive a written note of threat to kidnap and kill her and members of her family if a ransom of N20million is not paid. According to the prosecution, the offence is contrary to Section 323 of the Criminal Code Law Cap 2: 21 Vol. 1 Laws of Delta State 2006.”

The accused were charged with “intent to defraud menacingly by demanding N20million from the judge through a written note of threat and thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 406 of the Criminal Code Law Cap C 21 Vol. 1 Laws of Delta State 2006.”
