It was a little-known moment three decades ago that we have to thank for revolutionising the world we live in.

Billions of people now log on every day to do everything from order their shopping to chatting to mates and even catching up on our favourite telly.

Celebrities such as Stephen Fry communicate with us like never before on Twitter and Facebook, we can watch video clips of almost anything and download the latest chart hits at the touch of a button.

It has become one of the most important tools of modern life, and many of us just can’t manage without it.

The name comes from the “internet protocol suite” – a network developed by the US Department of Defense.

It was this new way of linking computers that paved the way for the arrival of what we know and love today. “But without it the internet and the World Wide Web as we know them could not have happened.

“The internet means there is nowhere and no-one in the world you can’t reach easily and cheaply.” Happy Birthday to the Internet
