Another Fire at INEC headquarters , Abuja

A SECTION of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Headquarters in Abuja was up in flames for about an hour Monday before firefighters contained the situation and prevented further damage.

There was no recorded case of death or major injury, just as the main complex of the headquarters was not affected. But the inferno, which became palpable to INEC members of staff at about 9a.m, destroyed office and personal effects like computers, fridges, air conditioners, stationeries and documents belonging to the Director of Voters’ Registration, Emmanuel Akem.

When The Guardian visited the INEC Headquarters at about 12 noon, the fire had been put out after a spirited effort by the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) firemen and their counterparts from the Federal Fire Service and the Armed Forces unit.

When contacted, the INEC Director of Public Affairs, Mr. Iorwuese Umenger, described the inferno as a minor incident, adding that there was no cause for alarm as the agency’s relevant data were still intact.
