Efforts by the Nigeria Police Force to enhance security at the nation’s borders are yielding fruit, a statement by Frank E. Mba, Deputy Force Public Relations Officer, said today.

The statement said that on January 20, one Daniel Ofori, a Ghanaian, and one Olufumolayo Adeyemo were arrested at Idiroko, Ogun State, trying to smuggle 5,564 rounds of live cartridges into Nigeria through the border with Benin Republic.

The two, who reside in Accra, Ghana, are suspected to be behind the supply of arms and ammunition to criminal groups operating in parts of Nigeria, Mr. Mba said.”
“The recovered cartridges were neatly concealed in the engine compartment and the inner crevices of the chassis of a Mercedes Benz 420 SE saloon car with registration No CC 270 FKJ driven by the said Daniel Ofori. They were intercepted by a Police Border Patrol Team while on tactical Anti-crime operations along Attan – Idiroko road, Idiroko, Ogun State.”

He said the suspects claimed to have taken off from Ghana via Benin Republic, en route Lagos, and are now being investigated by detectives from the Force Criminal Investigation Department, in line with the directive of the Inspector-General of Police.

“This breakthrough was made possible by recent measures taken by the Force to tighten the noose of security at all the country’s borders, in its avowed determination to cut off the communication and supply chains of international criminal gangs, thereby enhancing the safety and security of law abiding Nigerians,” the statement said.
