el-Rufai’s comment: 13 church groups blast Bakare

A conglomeration of 13 church groups in the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) yesterday faulted the comments by the Pastor and Founder of Latter Rain Assembly, Tunde Bakare, on the tweet by a former Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Mallam Nasir el-Rufai.

They told him to declare whether he is a Christian or Muslim.

Bakare, in his state of the nation address in Lagos, said that from its criticism of el-Rufai’s tweet on Jesus Christ, CAN was only diverting attention from the grave issues affecting the country.

He also alleged that CAN was an extension of the government.

But the Christian groups, which operate under the aegis of Tarayar Ekklisiyar Kristi A Nijeriya (TEKAN), said they were not surprised because Bakare was more of a politician than a pastor.

The President of TEKAN, Rev. Emmanuel Dzieggau, in an interview with reporters in Abuja, told Bakare that God would fight whoever made derogatory remarks about Him.

He said Nigerians should disregard comments from people like Bakare “because, if not in Nigeria, nobody will listen to a man like Bakare who double-speaks.”

Dzieggau described Bakare as a confused mind, adding that Nigerians should rather not take him serious because he has not recovered from the shock of the last general election.

He said: “We read the story credited to Tunde Bakare. First of all, he is not a member of CAN and we are not surprised because he is more of a politician than a pastor. One day, he will wake up and speak as a politician and another day, he will speak as a pastor. For him to say that CAN has no right to speak on somebody like el-Rufai, who derogates the person of our Lord Jesus Christ, is a very great offence.”
