FRSC to adopt Drivers License Verification Online - attains 70% Seat belt Usage

Osita Chidoka, chief executive and Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) has said that it would adopt online verification of driver’s license and number plates.

He stated this at a news conference as part of activities to mark the organization’s Silver Jubilee.

He also said the commission would soon commence the use of electronic ticketing and checking of the records of offending motorists.

Chidoka said there were over 10 million records in the commission’s database of drivers, vehicles, accidents and register of traffic offenders in the country.

He added that in order to ensure inter-connectivity of its daily activities; it had invested heavily in technology with the installation of 345 V-SATs.

According to him, the commission has recorded successes in the last 25 years as its efforts have resulted in reduction of crashes on the roads.

“Since the FRSC came on board, seatbelt usage and public awareness have risen to 70 per cent with improved use of helmet and installation of signs on the highways.”

Prior to the establishment of FRSC in 1988, traffic situation could best be described as chaotic and unpredictable with disturbing wave of accidents and human and material losses.

He announced that the FRSC had certified 534 Driver’s Training Schools and trained no fewer than 100,000 drivers under the ``Driving School Standardization Programme (DSSP) in the country.

``This is in addition to the registration of 2, 895 transport operators, inspection of 1,033 operators and the certification of 722,’’ he said. NCW
