The Federal Government has disclosed that out of 54,000 prisoners across the country, 38,000 of them were awaiting trial.

Of the said number awaiting trail only half of it, 16,000 have actually been convicted.

This was disclosd by the Minister of Interior Abba Moro while briefing journalists on the performance review of his ministry, after the weekly Federal Executive Council meeting which was chaired by President Goodluck Jonathan.

Moro also said those convicted are already undergoing rehabilitation that will enable them integrate into the society when they leave the prison.

"We have a sizeable number of awaiting trial inmates, there's no doubt about it. And like I said the proportion as at the last count was about 70% to 30%. Its an awesome number, its unacceptable. But of course that is the situation we inherited" he said. - DailyTimes
