Substitute Silvestre Varela's late strike boosted Portugal's hopes of reaching the Euro 2012 quarter-finals.

Pepe's thumping near-post header put Portugal ahead, before Helder Postiga smashed in a close-range effort.

But two headed goals from striker Nicklas Bendtner brought the Danes level and looked set to leave Paulo Bento's men with an uphill task to advance from Group B. Then with three minutes left, Varela's right-foot shot won it for Portugal.

On the other group Match of the day, It was Holland falling to the powerfil Germans again with a 2-1 loss.

Clarence Seedorf had this to say: "They have to believe. The chance is still there. This is a hard defeat to cope with but they showed some good moments in the second half when they had Sneijder on the left. It's just a pity they couldn't' give even more.

Former Wolfsburg and England manager, and current FC Twente boss, Steve McClaren on BBC Radio 5 live: "When Holland had the ball they looked a threat, but there wasn't enough in midfield to win the ball back from Germany. The Dutch game is based around the full-backs acting as wingers, but the full-backs remained as full-backs and they never pushed on.

There is still a bit of luck available to the Netherland team if they get to beat Portugal with a good goal Margin and pray Germany beats Dermark finishing the table at 13 - 3- 3- 3 with goals difference to seperate.

We wish them luck, i hate to see Sneidjer, Robben, Van persie, De Jong, go home soon.

Mario Mandzukic's second-half equaliser earned Croatia a vital draw against Italy to leave Group C wide open.

Croatia knew three points in Poznan would clinch their last-eight spot following an impressive opening 3-1 win against Republic of Ireland.

The Italians appeared in total control after taking the lead through Andrea Pirlo's wonderful first-half free-kick.

But Mandzukic's third Euro 2012 goal means the Italians may now need a big win over Ireland to progress.

Elsewhere it was Fernando Torres getting brace as Spain walloped Ireland four goals to nothing. Torres' powerful finish from 10 yards opened the scoring inside four minutes.

David Silva's composed effort just after the restart doubled the advantage, Torres poked in a third after a quick break and substitute Cesc Fabregas drove in a fourth.

The victory was enough to move Spain above Croatia, who they face on Monday, at the top of Group C.
