A military aircraft belonging to the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) was, on Thursday, involved in an accident at the airbase of the Special Operations Group (SOG), Nigerian Air Force, Port Harcourt.

Reports around the incident had conflicting details of what really happened, but one constant fact in the various reports was that no life was lost. Security guards at the entrance of the base would not permit ‘unauthorised persons to enter.

One of the two tales around the incident claimed the crashed aircraft was a fighter jet, which was conveying some arms and ammunition to an undisclosed place where a special operation is ongoing.

This tale stated that the incident occurred when the aircraft’s pilots, just a few moments after take off, discovered a mechanical fault and that it was in the bid to make an emergency landing that it failed to properly land.

A source in the airbase, who spoke under conditions of anonymity, said there were three persons on the aircraft, who were all rescued and had since been taken to a hospital.

Meanwhile, the Chief of Air Force, Air Marshal Alex Sabundu Badeh, has set up a panel to investigate the circumstances that led to the unfortunate incident. - Tribune
