Police Nab 162 Suspected Cultists In Lagos

Police in Lagos at the weekend recorded a major breakthrough in their war against cultists with the arrest of 162 suspects in Lagos Island.

The arrest was carried out in a joint raid by security agencies, aimed at nipping the activities of cultists and other hoodlums in the area in the bud.

The coordinated raid comprising of policemen from divisions under the Area ‘A’ command headquarters, Lion building, Lagos Island, the Special Anti Robbery Squad (SARS), Ikeja, Police Mobile Force (PMF) 20 Squadron, Ikeja,  Department of State Security (DSS), the military and members of Neighbourhood Watch, was led by the Commander, Area ‘A’ Command headquarters,  Mr Imohimi Edgar.

Sources said the operatives stormed hideouts of suspected cultists between the hours of 9pm and 10:30pm on Saturday. Among those arrested were two females.

 Areas raided, included LUTA, Bamgboshe, Masy, Oja-Oba  and Adeniji Adele under bridge.

Although it could not be ascertained whether those arrested were members of any cult group, but sources said that the suspects had been interrogated and screened, after which the innocent ones among them would be released.

The raid, it was gathered, was part of the proactive measures taken to check the menace of cult groups in the area and also to ensure that they did not have a foot hold on the Lagos Island.

“We acted on a tip off. And that is why we had to engage the services of members of the neighbourhood watch in the raid. From the raided hideouts, it was evident that some of them could be members of confraternity groups. But that will be determined at the end of investigations,” said the police sources.
