Grainy surveillance images have been released showing the moment a gunman opened fire on a Mother's Day parade in the US city of New Orleans.

The suspect, dressed in white T-shirt and dark pants, is seen firing off a barrage of bullets as the crowd suddenly scatters in all directions while others fall to the ground.

There appear to have been as many as three shooters in yesterday's attack, which left 19 people injured, including a girl and a boy both aged 10 who were grazed by the bullets.

"It appears that these two or three people just for a reason unknown to us started shooting at, towards or in the crowd. It was over in just a couple seconds," New Orleans Police New Orleans Police Superintendent Ronal Serpas said.

Most victims have been discharged from hospital but three people remain in a critical condition.

Police want to identify the suspected gunman in the surveillance footage and are offering a $10,000 reward for information leading to his arrest and indictment.

One witness told US news media the gunman on the footage appeared to be firing in a controlled manner, but it wasn't clear if he was trying to hit specific people. http://news.ninemsn.com.au/world/2013/05/14/05/34/footage-shows-mothers-day-gunman
