Rainstorm Destroys Over 70 Houses In Katsina, Adamawa

Rainstorm has destroyed over 50 buildings in Tandama village in Danja Local Government Area of Katsina State and Adamawa while another rainstorm destroyed over 20 buildings in and around the Adamawa State Polytechnic.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the affected houses in Katsina include residential houses and public buildings like the court and schools.

Alhaji Tijjani Lawal, the council’s Transition Committee Chairman, told newsmen after inspecting the affected areas yesterday that the incident occurred Sunday night.

Lawal said a committee had been constituted to verify the extent of the damage, adding that a relief package would be distributed to the victims.

According to him, the council has provided the victims with temporary accommodation pending the intervention of the state and federal governments.

He described the incident as the will of God, and cautioned people against indiscriminate refuse disposal as well as blocking water ways.

He said such acts were responsible for environmental pollution.

The chairman emphasised the need for collective efforts to protect the environment, urging residents to refrain from indiscriminate felling of trees. Lawal also advised them to cultivate the habit of tree planting and nursing to check desertification.

Meanwhile, the council has distributed 600 wrappers and head-gears (Hijab) each to non- indigenous residents and married women in the area.

Meanwhile, in Adamawa, properties worth millions of naira have been destroyed by a heavy rainstorm in the state.

The rainstorm which hit Adamawa Polytechnic yesterday left the student’s hostels, college library, staff quarters, electric poles and the properties of students of the college damaged.

The rector of the college, Professor Umar Bobboi, disclosed to newsmen in his office that the damage done to properties was in the region of tens of millions of naira even as he thanked God that no life or serious bodily harm was recorded.

He said following the incidence, the school authorities convened an emergency meeting where it was resolved that the college should close for two weeks to allow the authorities to carry out repairs on damaged structures.

Although, the rector has disclosed that the extent of the damage was yet to be ascertained, LEADERSHIP findings indicated that 10 blocks of hostels, six staff houses, the college’s library, the engineering complex, the college registry and a part of the perimeter fence were all affected by the storm.

Many other houses in the state capital, Yola, were also affected by the rainstorm
