A NATIONAL summit to resolve Nigeria’s multi-dimensional problems, including insecurity in some parts of the North, is being planned by eminent leaders from across the country.

As a way out of the security challenges, the leaders of thought, comprising former and current government functionaries, have been mobilised for the summit, which is expected to work out political consensus on how to fully arrest the insurgency following the state of emergency in Borno, Yobe and Adamawa states.

According to a statement by the Secretary of the National Summit Planning Committee, Miss Modupe Odubanjo, on behalf of the conveners, Alhaji Maitam Sule and leaders of the Northern Elders Forum, the summit is expected to provide lasting solutions to Nigeria’s multi-faceted problems and strengthen the unity of the nation.

Odubanjo said the three-day national summit would hold at Le Meridian Hotels and Resorts, Uyo, Akwa Ibom Ibom State from June 25 to 27.

She explained that the parley would “fashion consensus on the modality of a nationwide consultation and dialogue, while also assessing the controversial issues of amnesty for militants, as well as the latest emergency rule imposed on three northern states by President Goodluck Jonathan.”

She listed those already invited to convene the various sessions of the summit to include eminent jurist and leader of the Patriots, Prof. Ben Nwabueze, leader of the Northern Political Leaders Forum, Mallam Adamu Ciroma, Former Secretary General of the Commonwealth, Chief Emeka Anyaokwu, Nobel Laureate, Prof. Wole Soyinka and Gen. Theophilus Danjuma.

Others are Chief Alex Ekwueme, Chief Solomon Lar, Chief Edwin Clark, Prof. Pat Utomi, Dr. Tunji Braithwaite, Chief Audu Ogbeh, Gen. Alani Akinriade, CNPP Chairman, Alhaji Balarabe Musa, Chief Olu Falae, Dr. Junaid Mohammed, President of Nigeria Labour Congress,  Abduwahed Omar, former president of Nigerian Bar Association, Mr. Olisa Agbakoba, Mr. Femi Falana, former president of National Council of Women Society, Hajia Ramatu Usman, and President of the Nigerian Union of Journalists, Mallam Mohammed Garba, among others. - Nigeria Guardian
