Police spokesman Frank Mba has confirmed that suspected Boko Haram gunmen freed about forty inmates after staging a daring attack on the prison in Damaturu, the capital of Yobe State.

Earlier, police and prison sources in Damaturu had told the media that the prison attack took place around 6 a.m. today.

Residents narrates that sounds of sporadic gunshots could still be heard in the area several hours after the dramatic assault on the prison located on Gashua Road in Damaturu.

Mr. Mba disclosed that the attackers injured a prison warder. He added that one fleeing inmate was killed in a gunfight.

Last week, members of the Joint Task Force (JTF) had engaged suspected Boko Haram gunmen in a fierce gunfight. The exchange of gunfire led to the capture and possible execution of a leading Boko Haram commander, a former army private named Habib Bama.

Mr. Mba said that police and soldiers were on the trail of the attackers, adding that the police were reaching out to local residents to call police if they identify fleeing prisoners.
