The tablet-of-knowledge otherwise referred to as Opon Imo, Osun State’s first-of-its-kind revolutionary e-learning platform for the students shall receive public blessing today.

The platform slated to be unveiled by Engineer Rauf Aregbesola, state governor at Zenababs Half Moon Resorts, Ilesa, Osun is capable of addressing the educational insolvency that has thrived in the area following neglect of previous administrations.

According to statistics, in 1999, out of Nigeria’s 36 States, Osun was like a lead at the bottom of the river of failure, coming 35th in NECO exams results. In 2010, the State managed to crawl three rungs to the 32nd position.

However, following the current strives of the present administration in 2011, Osun shot up to number eight. All these happened just before the Launch of OPON IMO, the revolutionary e-learning tablet PC for the Senior Secondary School students of Osun.

The elated governor of the State while sharing the cheering news on his facebook page said, “This revolution is best left to your imagination in the next few years when the digital culture of academic excellence obtainable from Opon Imo deployment and uses, would have been fully unleashed in our educational sector.

“One of my aides calls it Ogbon Imo literally meaning: the wisdom of knowledge. I tremble at the forces of knowledge and wisdom that this Opon Imo is going to unleash in the medium and long term, upon our land as it brings immeasurable wealth and treasure back to our race with restoration of our honour and dignity,” he said.

Speaking on Opon Imo Fact Sheet, he added, "As we transit towards knowledge driven economies, the need to build human capacity to gain competitive advantage has become a front burner issue for developed and developing nations. This situation is seen as more critical for developing nations which hold the majority of the world’s uneducated and have suffered decades of education infrastructure neglect.

“To reverse this situation, in line with the millennium development goals timelines, developing nations will need more than orthodox initiatives to bridge the huge learning gap. The use of Information and Communications Technologies ICTs appears to be one of such promising innovative means of democratizing access and improving the quality of learning”

The feat is part of the State Government’s Opon Imo Technology Enhanced Learning System, (OTELS). The Opon Imo, “Tablet of Knowledge”, is a standalone e-learning tablet that provides the senior secondary students with the contents required to prepare for school leaving examinations. It provides 3 major content categories; text books, tutorials and practice questions. 150,000 of these tablets are being distributed to all senior secondary students across state schools in a move that is expected to radically democratize ‘access’ to learning, regardless of means, location or status.
