Lagos State set to Re-Number over 700,000 Houses

Lagos State is set to implement a unique house numbering project that will make identification easier for the over 700,000 buildings in the metropolis and enhance planning.

The era of haphazard numbering of houses and difficult identification of streets in Lagos State will soon be over a following moves to number afresh all the 700,000 buildings in the state. The House Numbering Project will be undertaken by the Lagos State Signage and Advertisement Agency, which is set to commence work on it in the weeks ahead.

The Managing Director, LASAA, Mr. George Noah, explained that the HNP was aimed at inscribing proper house numbers on all buildings and properties in the state with the resolve to provide an orderly house numbering pattern that would complement other activities of the state government, while at the same time match acceptable international standards.

The HNP is a follow up to the Street Directional Sign project, which was initiated by the agency in 2008 and was implemented in 2010 in selected neighbourhoods across the state with the installation of standard and reflective street directional signs on every street and in the selected areas to assist members of the public navigate their direction within the city.

The HNP, according to Noah, will provide answer to the problem of an almost non-existent house numbering that was identified during the SDS project.

According to Vanguard Media, the HNP would be expected to number about 1,194,525 houses. The state is believed to be housing over 17 million population estimate release by the Lagos State Geographic Information System, GIS.

The LASAA team led by Noah, kick-started the project at Akerele Street, Surulere Local Government area of the state with the aim of making Lagos State businesses and residential buildings  easily identifiable. The scheme is also designed to provide a more secure environment within the state and increase the quality of life of all citizens.
