Nigerians In South Africa Protest, Demand Sowore's Release

Nigerians in South Africa have condemned the arrest of activist, Omoyele Sowore, by the Department of State Services.

The Nigerians staged their protest at the country’s High Commission in Pretoria, South Africa, demanding among other things, a better governed Nigeria, better security and safety for all citizens at home and in the Diaspora.

The protesters, who were initially received by a senior official in the embassy, insisted on seeing the Nigerian High Commissioner to South Africa, Kabir Bala.

Doris Ikeri-Solarin, who spoke on behalf of the group, said, “As Nigerians resident in South Africa, we are bitter and not happy with the situation that is going on at home.

“Therefore, we demand that the Federal Government should release Omoyele Sowore and all other comrades arrested during the RevolutionNow protest.”

Addressing the protesters, Bala said, “There is no way the government will achieve its own objectives of making life better for citizens if we don’t cooperate and also do it peacefully.

“I will pass your message back home.”

Sowore was on Saturday arrested by operatives of the Department of State Services in Lagos for calling on Nigerians to protest against bad governance in Nigeria. 

He is yet to be released by the government despite growing calls for his freedom.
