Subsidy protest: Court awards N4m against police who shot at protesters

An Ikeja High court Friday found the police authority and its officials guilty for shooting at protesters, during last year’s protest against subsidy removal.

The trial judge, Justice Bola Okikiolu-Ighile who passed the judgment also ordered the police, especially the former Divisional Police Officer of Pen Cinema Police Station, Agege, Lagos, Mr. Segun Fabunmi, accused of firing shot at the protesters to pay the sum of N4 million as compensation to four protesters, who filed suit for the violation of their fundamental rights.

Their case was filed and argued by the Office of the Lagos State Office of Public Offender (OPD).
In her judgement, Justice Okikiolu-Ighile held defendants liable for “recklessly shooting and inflicting bodily injury on the applicants.”

Apart from this, the court ordered the respondents to apologise to the applicants on two national newspapers.
