Nigerians remember late Super Eagles legend Rashidi Yekini on his 56th posthumous birthday

Wednesday, October 23 is the 56th posthumous birthday of Super Eagles legend Rashidi Yekini.


               
           
               
                   

Nigerians took to Twitter to pay tribute to late Super Eagles legend Rashidi Yekini who would have been 56 on Wednesday, October 23. 


               
           
               
                   

Yekini who remains Super Eagles highest goalscorer with 37 goals died in May 2012 at the age of 48. 


               
           
               
                   

The late striker scored Nigeria’s first FIFA World Cup goal at USA 94 and made 58 appearances for the Super Eagles. 


               
           
               
                   

On Wednesday, Nigerians took to Twitter to remember the late Yekini on his 56th posthumous birthday. 


               
           
               
                   

Nigeria’s Minister of Youth and Sports Sunday Dare led the tributes. 


               
           
               
                   

Remembering Rashidi Yekini: Today is the 56th Posthumous Birthday Of one of Nigeria’s greatest footballers. I celebrate him and may his soul continue to Rest In Peace. Yekini represented Nigeria in five major tournaments, including two FIFA World Cup tournaments and was the first Nigerian to be voted African Footballer of the Year in 1993.


               
           
               
                   

He helped the Super Eagles to win the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Tunisia, where he also topped the goal charts and was named best player of the competition.


               
           
               
                   

He also participated at the Olympic level in Seoul in 1988.
