Barber in prison over alleged armed robbery

An Ikeja Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday remanded a barber, Oriyomi Saliu, 27, in Kirikiri Prisons in Lagos, over alleged armed robbery.

The Magistrate, Mrs A. Ipaye-Nwachukwu, said that the accused would stay in prison, pending when legal advice from the state’s Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) would be ready.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the plea of the accused was, however, not taken.

Saliu is facing a two-count charge of conspiracy and armed robbery.

The Prosecutor, Sgt Paul Inedu, told the court that the accused and others still at large, committed the offences at 11.30 p.m. on May 15 at Joy ‘B’ Hotel, Ijegun Road, Ikotun, Lagos.

He said that the accused, armed with a gun and other dangerous weapons, robbed his victim, one Mr Yekinni Yusuf of two Nokia phones valued at N65,000.

Inedu said that the offences contravened Sections 1(2) (a) and 5 of the Robbery and Firearms (Special Provisions) Act, Laws of the Federation 1990 (as amended).

The case was adjourned till July 11 for the DPP’s advice.
