Brothers Arraigned For Allegedly Beating Police To Coma

The police on Wednesday in Lagos arraigned two brothers, Bashiru Adekanbi, 31, and Rasaki Adekanbi, 32, who allegedly beat a police corporal to a state of coma.

The brothers, who reside at No. 13, Nosamu St., Ajegunle, appeared before an Apapa Magistrates' Court on a four-count charge of conspiracy, resisting arrest, assault and breach of the peace.

The Prosecutor, Corporal John Iberedem, told the court that the duo beat up Corporal Dada Owoeye and injured him while performing his official duty

"The accused, with one other at large, resisted arrest over an unlawful assault, attacked the policeman and beat him to coma," Mr. Iberedem said.

He said that the brothers committed the offences on April 29 at 10:00 p.m., at their residence.

The prosecutor said that the offences contravened Sections 168 (A, B), 171, 172 and 409 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

Section 171 prescribes three years imprisonment for assault, while Section 409 provides for two years imprisonment for conspiracy.

However, both of the accused persons pleaded not guilty to all the counts.

Senior Magistrate P. A. Adekomaiya granted them bail in the sum of N20, 000 with one surety each. He directed that the sureties must show evidence of tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

Mr. Adekomaiya adjourned the case till Friday for mention.
