Man Arraigned For Wearing Police Uniform, having fake ID card

A 30-year-old man, Chima Joel, has been arraigned before an Ebute-Metta Magistrate’s court for dressing like a police offiser and extorting money from commuters at Ajah area of Lagos.

He is also accused in faking documents, he has impersonated one Corporal Alonge Jerome by removing his (Alonge) picture from his warrant identity card and inserting his own.

The charge sheet read in part, “That you, Chima Joel, on March 1,2012 at about 11.25pm along Chevron Drive Street, Ajah, Lagos in the Lagos Magisterial District did unlawfully claim to be a member of Nigeria Police Force by wearing a mobile police ‘T’ shirt/vest, having in your possession a police warrant identity card bearing force number 388463 belonging to one police corporal Alonge Jerome,and claimed to be a mobile police officer attached to Mopol 20, Mobile Police squadron, Ikeja Lagos and thereby committed an offence punishable under section 77(b) of the criminal law of Lagos state Nigeria, 2011.”

However, he pleaded not guilty to the crime.

The magistrate, Mrs. Y.O Aje-Afunwa, granted Joel bail for N20, 000 with two sureties in like sum.
The matter was adjourned till July 17.
