2000 CCTVs installed in Lagos, Abuja

The Federal Government plans to commission 2,000 Closed Circuit Television Camera (CCTVs) in Abuja and Lagos State in few weeks time.

Minister of Police Affairs, Navy Captain Caleb Olubolade (rtd), said yesterday in Abuja that some components of the projects were very sensitive and that it was not in the nation’s security interest to disclose certain details about their completion or otherwise.
He, however, said the President would soon be commissioning some of the projects in Lagos and Abuja.
The minister identified indiscipline, corruption, lack of training and poor funding as some of the major challenges facing the Nigeria Police. Olubolade lamented that the lack of forensic laboratory had affected the police negatively, especially in the area of investigation.

According to him, the none passage of the Reform Trust Fund Bill initiated by the Federal Government in 2010 had been a major constraint in terms of funding the Force, stressing that more emphasis is being placed on inter-agency cooperation to rid the country of criminal elements, such as kidnappers, armed robbers, assassins, human traffickers and terrorists.

He said the ministry complements the Police in terms of training, adding that last year alone, 529 officers and men were trained as Explosive Ordinance Technicians; 2, 490 in peacekeeping operations and 649 personnel in intelligence policing.
