Chief Anthony Joshua may just begin to have a nice ring to it soon enough.

The WBA, IBF and WBO heavyweight champion of the world, Anthony Joshua, will be crowned a chief in his hometown of Sagamu, Ogun State, when next he checks into town.

The 30-year-old was treated to a hero’s welcome in the birthplace of his parents this week in Nigeria, where he made small talk with two notable traditional rulers and posed for photographs with a cross section of fawning clan heads.

Hundreds of fans in Sagamu chanted Joshua’s name and sang his praises as he visited the palaces of the Alaafin of Elepe and the Akarigbo of Remo land.

The Guardian reports that the Chief of Staff to Akarigbo of Remo, Alhaji Iliasu Aina, has disclosed that the traditional ruler will confer Joshua with a chieftaincy title when he comes visiting again in March of 2020.

“Joshua’s visit on Wednesday was an impromptu one,” Aina was quoted to have said by the newspaper. “He is coming back to Nigeria in March, and he is going to be conferred with a chieftaincy title. He is our son and it was really a delight for us to receive him in his hometown on Wednesday,” Aina, who is popularly referred to as 'Merry, Merry,' said.

The Guardian writes that the boxer could be conferred with the Ajagungbade of Yoruba land (A warrior who fights and brings crowns) title.

Joshua could take on the winner of the Deontay Wilder and Tyson Fury bout in Saudi Arabia, his promoter Eddie Hearn has hinted.

Wilder and Fury will square up to the other on Sunday, February 23, 2020  at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.
