Building collapse: Tribunal begins sitting
« on: June 26, 2013, 08:36:38 AM »
A  tribunal of inquiry to probe the spate of building collapse in Lagos has started sitting.

The tribunal was set up by Governor Babatunde Fashola in May 2013 to inquire into the causes of collapsed buildings and recommend steps that will guide against such occurrences.

Speaking at the inaugural sitting on Tuesday, the tribunal chairman and a former chairman of Nigerian Institute of Architects, Lagos Chapter Mrs. Abimbola Ajayi, said the tribunal was also another step to stem unwholesome practices.

She said, “Every year, incidences of building collapse are recorded. No responsible government will allow this trend to continue unabated.

“Our assignment among other things is also expected to assist the government to judiciously act on cases that are not in compliance with the existing regulations and standard.”

Ajayi added that regular sitting of the tribunal would begin on July 1.
