189 suspects arrested, 11,135kg of illicit drugs siezed in Abuja - NDLEA

The Abuja Command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) on Monday said it arrested 189 suspects and seized 11,135.49 kilogrammes of illicit drugs between January and June 2013.

This is contained in a statement signed by the Public Relations Officer of the Agency, Peter Adegbe. The statement said the suspects were 178 male and 11 female.

It also stated that the agency seized 11,134 kilogrammes of Cannabis Sativa, 1.34 kilogrammes of Psychoactive Substances and 17.7 grammes of Cocaine within the same period.

Particularly, it stated that the agency arrested 58 suspects and seized 70 kilogrammes of Cannabis Sativa in the Orange Market, Mararaba, Nasarawa State. It also stated that during the same period, the command counselled a total of 82 drug-dependant persons and secured the conviction of 44 persons before the Federal High Court, Abuja.

The statement added that the agency has returned N605, 270; $1,100 (about N160, 000); and 100 British Pounds (about N26, 200), being various monies seized from the drug peddlers in the six months under review.

The statement quoted the Abuja Commander, Dennis Obiefule, as re-affirming the commitment of the agency toward a drug-free society.
