Senate President, David Mark yesterday warned that future attempts by the Federal Government to remove subsidy on petroleum products would be resisted by Nigerian if the funds accruing to the Subsidy Re-Investment and Empowerment Programme (SURE-P), is mismanaged.

Senator Mark, who made this known when he inaugurated the Senate adhoc committee on SURE-P chaired by deputy leader, Senator Abdul Ahmed Ningi, tasked the panel on adequate oversight function of the programme.

The Senate President said, “What justification will be practical evidence of the things that you have done with the money that you realize from fuel subsidy?  It is not a matter of statistics on pages of newspapers, it has to be what people can see and attest to. There should be clear evidence of things like improvement in empowerment of women and youth, improvement in healthcare for women and children, in mass transit.”

Speaking earlier, chairman of the newly inaugurated committee, Senator Ningi said “the committee will put in its best to ensure that adequate oversights, probity, transparency, accountability and to see to it that various projects and programmes in the purview of the SURE-P are implemented to the optimum benefits of Nigerians.”
