Nnamdi Kanu Has Been Given Consular Assistance – British High Commissioner

The British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Catriona Laing, says the British authorities have rendered consular assistance to the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu.

It will be recalled that operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) did not bring Kanu before Justice Binta Nyako of the Federal High Court on Monday to continue his trial bordering on terrorism among others.

This forced Nyako to adjourn the case till October 21, with Kanu’s absence sparking a lot of criticisms and anxieties.

Laing stated the IPOB leader has received Consular support of the British government being a British citizen while talking on Wednesday on Arise TV.

Speaking this morning on Arise TV, Laing said, “We have offered all necessary Consular assistance to Nnamdi Kanu as a British national. No, I cannot say anything about the case, but we have rendered Consular assistance to Nnamdi Kanu.”

Also, Ifeanyi Ejiofor, Kanu’s lawyer, said during the Arise TV interview that operatives of the DSS harassed his colleague during their visit to their client in their custody.

He said this while making a reference to the application filed that the DSS should transfer Kanu to the prison custody as regarded by law.

“He should have access to his lawyers. And prison custody is the place recognized by law. The DSS told us initially that they were holding him for interrogation. Now, we are being restricted from seeing him in DSS custody.

“We are not comfortable with him being detained in the DSS custody because that’s not the place to be. We cannot effectively defend him while in DSS custody.

“One of my colleagues was even harassed when we visited him in their (DSS) custody. But, we didn’t disclose this. I’m making this thing public for the world to know.” Ejiofor said.
