Africa and her many suitors (America, Europe, China...e.t.c)

AFRICA is a continent that has always been a much-sought bride by several lovers since the first contact with the West and recently she is being courted by the African ruling class itself.
According to Professor Pius Adesanmi, the winner of the Penguin Prize for African Writing and author of  You’re Not a Country, Africa! in a keynote lecture delivered at the annual conference of the African Studies Course Union, University of Toronto, February 15, 2013 last month, Africa is the only continent whose encounter with modernity by those with a superior capacity has had a negative impact on the continent.

The professor noted that Africa’s sheepish humanity has seen the continent being ‘courted’ by several lovers like the Arab invaders, the European explorers, slave traders, colonisers, missionaries, captains of industry, corporate CEOs, multi-national corporation chief executive officers, humanitarian aid workers, Christian charity workers, NGO workers, experts, expatriates and the likes of Hollywood celebrity serial child adopter Angelina Jolie, not to talk of Rock stars like Bob Geldof-nicknamed Mr Africa.

The academic sarcastically noted that no greater love has all these characters for Africa that they gave up the comforts of Arabia and Europe and came to risk mosquitoes and malaria in the so-called ‘heart of darkness’.

True to the professor’s acute observation, for the last five hundred years Africa is an ever youthful, beautiful maiden whose breasts continue producing land, copper, gold, diamonds, cocoa, coffee, rubber, ivory, cotton, uranium and crude oil.

It is this fertility that has made her never short of suitors with the current princes charming –America, Europe, China – seeking Africa’s hand in marriage. read on: http://www.daily-mail.co.zm/?p=3400
