Christian Eriksen was worth his weight in gold as Brentford further distanced themselves from the relegation zone with a priceless 2-0 win over Brentford.

Ivan Toney struck twice after the 85th minute to move the Bees nine points clear of the Clarets, who remain stuck in 17th.

The Englishman made it five goals in his late two games as Thomas Frank’s side secured a second-consecutive win, but the deadlock was broken thanks to a moment of magic from Eriksen.

Starting a competitive match for the second time since his cardiac arrest at Euro 2020, the Dane delivered a stunning left-footed cross for Toney to put Brentford in front.

And it was the ex-Tottenham midfielder who slipped Toney through in stoppage time before he was brought down by Nathan Collins.

The Burnley defender was sent off and Toney continued his 100 per cent record from the spot with the last kick of the game, making it three successfully converted penalties in two games.

Many had tipped Brentford for relegation following a run of seven defeats in eight Premier League matches.

Faced with must-win games against relegation rivals Norwich and Burnley, two starts from Eriksen has delivered two victories.

Having taken a huge gamble on the 30-year-old, it appears to be a punt which has already paid off.
