Morecambe booked their place in League One next season thanks to a controversial penalty in extra-time.

The Shrimps were awarded the spot kick in the second period of extra-time against Newport, which was duly dispatched by Carlos Mendes Gomes.

Replays showed that initial contact was outside the box and Morecambe were perhaps fortunate to be handed the opportunity late on, which they duly took.

Newport were the more dominant team in the League Two Play-Off final at Wembley enjoying the bulk of possession and having plenty of shots on goal.

After 90 minutes at Wembley, neither Morecambe or Newport could break the deadlock as the match entered 30 minutes of extra-time.

The Welsh side had amassed 18 shots, but still could not find that all important goal.

The deadlock was eventually broken by a Carlos Mendes Gomes penalty as the Spaniard sent goalkeeper Tom King the wrong way to score in the 107th minute.

Referee Bobby Madley had pointed to the spot after substitute John O’Sullivan was brought down by Ryan Haynes despite contact appearing to be outside the area. However, in the absence of VAR, the decision stood.

Commentating for talkSPORT 2, Chris Iwelumo said: “It’s huge. It’s an overhit ball in behind, but the contact was outside the box anyway. He’s threw himself in the box.

“It’s never a penalty. The contact was outside the box and he’s thrown himself in there. Massive decision.”

Gomes cooly finished to see his side win 1-0 and reached League One for the first time in their history.
