Cristiano Ronaldo was dropped for Portugal’s last-16 World Cup clash with Switzerland.

Manager Fernando Santos left the 37-year-old on the bench for Tuesday’s knockout clash in Qatar.

Ronaldo had started all three of their group stage matches, scoring one goal.

Santos decided to play Gonçalo Ramos up front instead.

The five-time Ballon d’Or winner received criticism from his manager for his actions after being substituted in the defeat to South Korea.

He put his finger to his lips after being taken off, apparently taking issue with comments from striker Cho Gue-sung for asking him to speed up his exit.

“Before my substitution, one of their players was telling me to leave quickly,” Ronaldo said. “I told him to shut up, he has no authority, he doesn’t have to say anything.”

Asked about his reaction, Santos added: “Have I seen the images? Yes, I didn’t like it, not at all. I didn’t like it. I really didn’t like it.

“But from that moment onwards everything is finished regarding that issue.

“These matters are resolved behind closed doors. It’s resolved. Full stop on this matter and now everyone is focused on tomorrow’s match.”

Ronaldo is Portugal’s captain and their record goalscorer with 118 goals in 194 games.
