Beckham took on a similar role during the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, one that he was widely criticised for.

He is one of a number of United legends that Sheikh Jassim has earmarked if his offer for the Premier League giants is accepted.

However, the former England captain has now spoken on the links and the potential takeover of the club he spent nearly 12 years at.

“At the moment, there’s no stability,” he told American broadcaster CNBC, before adding: “It’s the right time for somebody to take over.”

When he addressed the prospect of being an ambassador in the Qatari deal, he said: “At the moment there’s been no discussion.

“I have had a long-standing relationship with Qatar because of my involvement with Paris Saint-Germain when I played there and won the championship.

“So obviously there’s going to be some connection there and people talking about my involvement in Manchester because you put the two together, myself, United, plus PSG and there’s a connection.

“So, people will obviously be talking about that but there’s been no discussion at the moment.”

Beckham is also confident that a deal is likely to be completed: “I think something’s going to happen, I think there will be a takeover, I think it’s the right time.

“I think we all have our own opinions on who we feel that should takeover but in my opinion, it’s whoever cares about the club the most and going to take it back to where it should be.”

Beckham enjoyed an illustrious spell at United, scoring 85 goals and assisting another 120 in 394 appearances.

He won six Premier League titles, two FA Cups and the Champions League before going on to play for Real Madrid, LA Galaxy, AC Milan and PSG.

United’s current owners, the Glazer family, announced last November they were exploring ‘strategic alternatives’ for the club.

Since then, Sheikh Jassim and Sir Jim Ratcliffe have led the race for a takeover at Old Trafford.

However amid their discontent towards the Glazers, fans have become increasingly frustrated with how long the process has taken.
