Liverpool star Diogo Jota escaped a red card after booting Oliver Skipp in the head that left him bloodied before scoring the winner.

The Tottenham midfielder went to head the ball in the middle of the pitch when the Liverpool attacker flew in with his leg high in the air.

Jota booted Skipp in the head

And Jota’s boot connected with Skipp right above the eye, that left blood pouring out of his head.

Medical staff attended to the Spurs star for several minutes before he came off to be further looked at.

It led to a huge reaction on social media with plenty of fans shocked that Jota was not sent off.

And the decision was not even checked on VAR, though the Portugal international did receive a booking.

To rub salt further in the wounds, Jota went on to score the winner against Tottenham barely a minute after Richarlison grabbed a late equaliser.

Speaking after the match, interim coach Ryan Mason was furious with the decision: “Probably one of the clearest red cards I’ve seen on Oliver Skipp.

“I have to be careful what I see but ultimately that’s an impossible one to miss. When you talk about endangering an opponent, to draw blood from a stud when his head if 5.5ft in the air just baffles me.

“That type of decision is the difference between winning the game or not.

“For me it’s tough to understand and I’d like an explanation. I see it in real time and you have a feel for those sort of moments.

“The VAR official has a replay. I’m devastated about today because of the way the game went.”

Speaking on talkSPORT, Darren Ambrose said: “The ball is in the air, it’s gone high, Oliver Skipp has gone with his head and Jota has went in.

“It’s accidental I know, but that’s dangerous play, right? There’s blood on his face!”

Defending Jota, Adebayo Akinfenka then stated: “There’s blood, but the reason is because Oliver Skipp dips his head for it.

“When you look at it in slow motion, the ball bounces up, Skipp goes to head it, and knock it away with his head.

“Diogo Jota is not that tall, so he’s gone to lift it, so he’s caught him, it’s dangerous in the sense where he’s caught him.

“But I think it’s a yellow. Everyone was surrounding the ref, but there was nothing more, it wasn’t malicious, but he did catch him, there’s no two ways about it.”

Liverpool had raced into a 3-0 lead after 15 minutes after goals from Curtis Jones, Luis Diaz and Mohamed Salah.

Jota’s goal was a cruel blow to Tottenham

Harry Kane got one back before the break to give Spurs hope, something they made full use of in the second half.

Heung-min Son made it 3-2 with 15 minutes to go as Richarlison came off the bench to score his first Premier League goal for Tottenham.

But it meant nothing as a shocking backpass from Lucas Moura found Jota, who could have been sent off, but instead he delivered the sucker punch to Spurs just 99 seconds after Richarlison’s equaliser.
