England Women continued their unbeaten run under Sarina Wiegman with a 4-0 win against Switzerland in their last game before Euro 2022.

The Lionesses dominated the game and broke the deadlock thanks to Alessio Russo’s second-half header, which capped a good performance from the Manchester United forward.

A Georgia Stanway penalty and headers from Beth England and Jill Scott were enough to secure the 4-0 win heading into the tournament, which begins on Wednesday.

Truthfully, England could have racked up that scoreline within the opening ten minutes, but they squandered multiple opportunities to take the lead.

First, the ball kindly dropped to Chelsea’s Fran Kirby inside the six-yard box after good work from Keira Walsh, but her close-range effort was saved well by goalkeeper Seraina Friedli.

It was Lauren Hemp who tried her luck next, after a smart counter-attack by Wiegman’s side.

Beth Mead and Russo led the attack, but the Arsenal winger was too slow with her pass, which left Hemp surrounded by defenders, and she could only manage a tame shot on goal.

The best of the three opportunities involved Russo and Hemp again, the latter worked the ball well down the flank, skipping past a defender and whipping a ball across the face of goal.

Russo managed to get on the end of the delivery and it looked destined to be 1-0 after the Swiss goalkeeper fumbled her effort, but she managed to jump on the ball before it crossed the line.

More dominant play by the Lionesses followed, with the next best chance coming from a set-piece, when Rachel Daly’s header was cleared off the line.

The second half started in a similar fashion and, after a sustained spell of pressure, they took the lead.

Daly lofted an incredible ball to the back post, where Russo sent a powerful header across goal and into the far corner.

The Red Devils attacker staked a serious claim to start England’s first game of the tournament against Austria on Wednesday.

Hemp is another player that impressed and she was denied a fantastic goal, when she connected acrobatically with a cross, which was stopped on the line again.

In the goalmouth scramble that followed, however, the Lionesses were awarded a penalty after a handball, which Stanway emphatically converted.

England’s third was scored by England, as Mead headed home to make it three, whilst 153-cap midfielder Scott capped the victory as she nodded in in stoppage time.

The comfortable win will please Wiegman, which also keeps her unbeaten record as boss intact heading into the European Championship.
