Frank Lampard is the bookmakers’ favourite to become England’s next Under-21 manager following their exit from the European Under-21 Championship.

The Young Lions crashed out of the European Championship at the group stage for the second successive tournament on Wednesday.

After losing to Switzerland and Portugal in their opening two games, Aidy Boothroyd’s men needed to beat Croatia by a two-goal margin to have any hope of qualifying to the knockout stage.

And with Portugal beating Switzerland, England looked to have done just that thanks to goals from Eberechi Eze and Curtis Jones.

However, Domagoj Bradaric’s wonder goal from range in the first minute of stoppage-time broke England hearts.

Boothroyd’s England contract expires this summer and serious questions will be asked of his failure to get the best out of the promising talent at his disposal.

Betfair has former Chelsea boss Frank Lampard as the 2/1 favourite to replace Boothroyd in the England U21 hot seat.

Lampard, who won 106 caps for England, has been out of work since being sacked by the Blues in January with his only other managerial experience coming at Derby in the Championship.

Eddie Howe is Betfair’s second favourite at 15/2 to get the Young Lions job, while Chris Wilder (9/1) and Gary Neville (10/1) follow closely behind.

A number of other former England players are also in the running for the post, including John Terry (14/1), Michael Carrick (16/1), Paul Scholes (25/1) and Wayne Rooney (33/1)

Below you can see the latest odds on who’s in contention to be Boothroyd’s successor, according to Betfair.

talkSPORT host Andy Goldstein slammed Boothroyd’s ‘stupid mistakes’ for the Young Lions premature Euro 2021 departure.

He said: “The reason we’ve not won anything for 37 years is nothing to do with that. It’s because of mistakes that someone like Aidy Bootroyd or Aidy Boothroyd has made over those years.

“In 2019, he put Phil Foden on the bench as we crashed out of the tournament against Romania.

“The game before that, Phil Foden was head and shoulders above everyone in that side and scored an unbelievable goal.

“Phil Foden, head and shoulders above everyone in a game we must win to stay in the competition, he dropped him.

“That’s the reason why we don’t win because of stupid mistakes, stupid decisions being made.”
