Arsenal defender Gabriel Magalhaes has been accused of letting his fans, teammates and manager down after being needlessly sent off in a 2-1 loss to Manchester City.

The Gunners were in the ascendancy against the Premier League leaders after a dominant first-half, putting in an impressive shift against reigning champions City.

Four minutes of madness in the second period saw things collapse though, with Xhaka first giving away a penalty just 10 minutes after the break.

Riyad Mahrez dispatched the spot kick, and defender Gabriel was then booked for scuffing the penalty spot beforehand.

A goal-line clearance from Nathan Ake and a shocking miss from Gabriel Martinelli saw Arsenal miss out on instantly re-taking the lead, and then things quickly deteriorated.

A body-check from Gabriel on City striker Gabriel Jesus saw him pick up a second yellow in two minutes, drastically reducing his side’s chances of taking any points from the game.

And talkSPORT commentator Alvin Martin couldn’t believe the action of Gabriel and his supporters.

“I don’t think Arsenal fans should be clapping him off, because he could have very well cost them here,” he said.

“Gabriel lost his head, got the first booking and you just don’t make that second challenge, run straight into a player knowing you’re going to get sent off.”

“It’s three of the worst decisions from players we’ve seen, first from Xhaka and now with Gabriel twice,” an exasperated Martin added.

“He’s let his fans down, his teammates down and certainly his manager.

“They’ve been so good in every sense until the last five minutes, it’s a real shame. Arsenal are up against it now.

“It beggars belief really, you’ve got two experienced players making dreadful mistakes.”

With the extra man, Guardiola’s City dominated the closing stages, and a stoppage time winner from midfielder Rodri sent his side 11 points clear at the top of the league.

Gabriel’s booking also saw the Gunners become the first Premier League side to pick up 100 red cards.

Not only is their disciplinary record bad in the top flight, but also under manager Mikel Arteta, with 11 players sent off since he took charge – the most of any side.
