Darwin Nunez has broken his silence following his sending off against Crystal Palace on Monday night.

The Liverpool forward endured a horrific Anfield debut after missing two big opportunities in the first half before the red mist descended, leading him to be red carded for a headbutt on Joachim Andersen.

The pair had been tussling all through the match to that point, but tempers flared when the Uruguayan forward tried to flick his head towards Andersen, before making a clean connection with the defender’s face.

Jurgen Klopp certainly wasn’t happy after the match, telling sKY Sports: “Darwin knows [he let his teammates down]. I will talk to him. It was not a reaction we want to see.

“He know he will be challenged in this way, centre-halves will do that, but it is not a reaction we want. But we will use the time productively. We will use the suspension for physical work to make him strong – not a punishment but to make him stronger.”

However the forward has since taken to social media to express his regret at the incident, saying: “I am aware of the ugly attitude I had. I’m here to learn from my mistakes and it won’t happen again.”

In another tweet, he added: “Apologies to Liverpool all. I’ll be back.”

While Nunez is set to serve a three-match ban for his headbutt, Jason Cundy believes that the forward should face more.

He said on The Sports Bar: “The headbutt from Nunez, I personally think he’ll get more than three, I think he’ll end up with a bigger ban.

“What he did was a disgrace. Absolute disgrace.

“I think he should get a five-match ban. Violent conduct right there. Headbutting someone is an assault, that is an assault. He headbutted him.

“That to me is more than three games. What you saw him do could’ve broken Andersen’s nose.”
