Jordan Henderson looked emotional as he was given a standing ovation in what may be his final home game as an Ajax player.
The 33-year-old continued his return to full fitness ahead of the Euro 2024 by starting Ajax‘s comfortable 3-0 win over Almere City.
The England international was a much-heralded signing at the Eredivisie giants after arriving as a free agent in January.
However, just four months later, Ajax are said to be considering his future having failed to qualify for next season’s Champions League.
Henderson became one of the club’s highest earners having penned a two-and-a-half-year deal until June 2026.
He started eight of the club’s next ten matches after terminating his contract at Al Ettifaq in Saudi Arabia.
But his progress was interrupted by an injury sustained during the March international break which sidelined him for five games.
The ex-Liverpool captain grabbed an assist upon his return in the 4-1 victory over Volendam last weekend before facing Almere on Sunday.
Henderson played 79 minutes, had 98 touches and made two key passes before he was replaced by Branco van den Boomen.
The midfielder looked downcast as he acknowledged the applause from the crowd at the Johan Cruyff Arena.
Ajax’s result guaranteed fifth spot but the club won’t be playing in Europe’s elite next season following a second successive difficult campaign.
The Amsterdam outfit are nine points adrift of AZ Alkmaar in fourth with just one match remaining.
According to The Athletic, Henderson and ex-Tottenham winger Steven Bergwijn are now among the players with uncertain futures.
Reports in the Netherlands then emerged that Henderson will hold talks with Ajax soon and a quick departure has not been ruled out.
The England star failed to get on the scoresheet but watched on as Bergwijn scored a quick-fire first-half hat-trick to seal all three points.
