Newcastle’s chances of Premier League survival received a huge boost with a 2-0 win over Wolves at St James’ Park, but goalkeeper Jose Sa was far from happy about it.

January signing Chris Wood bagged a 72nd minute penalty to decide the tie, but Sa was livid with the decision to award the spot-kick.

And the Wolves keeper was livid

Wood had already put the ball in the net in the first half when Bruno Guimaraes and Miguel Almiron combined to create a moment of magic.

Guimaraes presented Wood with a tap-in which he eventually converted whilst lying on the floor, but an offside in the build-up stopped a slow first-half from bursting into life.

Two other Newcastle technicians instead decided the affair, with Allan Saint-Maximin craftily setting Joelinton off on the counter with a neat piece of skill on the halfway line.

The Brazilian then found Wood in the box, who hit the deck during a challenge from Sa, setting himself up to bag the game’s winner.

The Portuguese shot-stopper has been in fine form for Bruno Lage’s team this season, but realised how costly his decision to rush off his line might turn out to be.

Wolves‘ chances of returning to the European stage where they impressed so much during the 2019/20 have been dented by the result, which could prove far more crucial to Newcastle.

Wood was able to celebrate just his second goal in black and white, and first at St James’ Park

The Magpies are now a whole 10 points from the bottom three, snapping a three-game losing run that threatened to drag them back into the relegation fight.

That battle looks like it could now be just a head-to-head between Burnley and Everton, setting Newcastle up for a transformative summer spending spree under their new ownership.
