Lionel Messi will be among the players impacted by the implementation of pink cards at this summer’s Copa America.

The Copa America tournament takes place in June and July in the United States with the new colour of cards set to be on display.

The new card will be used for health reasons if a player has been on a receiving end of a challenge that has affected their head.

If a player has picked up a head injury, or is suspected of having suffered some form of concussion, the player will be given a pink card.

This will then allow their team to have a sixth and extra substitution available to them on top of the already-permitted five.

The team’s coaches must notify the officials that they would like to make such a change, with the head referee then issuing the pink card to authorise the switch.

Players given a pink card cannot re-enter the field of play and must go to the changing rooms or medical centre.

The doctor who detected the injury must then send a signed concussion evaluation to the CONMEBOL medical committee within 24 hours of the end of the match.

Pink cards will be universally launched on July 1, however, tournaments that start before that date have the option to implement the new law ahead of schedule.

The Copa America kicks off on 20 June and will come to an end on 14 July – the same day as the Euro 2024 final.
