Tony Cascarino has urged Premier League clubs to consider hiring Steven Gerrard after the Liverpool legend led Rangers to the brink of the Scottish Premiership title.

Gers stand on the verge of finally putting a decade of hurt and anguish behind them after a 3-0 win over St Mirren moved Gerrard’s team within touching distance of the title.

The former England international and his players had to fight their way into Ibrox past thousands of supporters ignoring lockdown rules to celebrate their club’s impending crowning as domestic kings.

And the unbeaten Light Blues did not let their expectant faithful down as goals from Ryan Kent, Alfredo Morelos – who now has 15 for the season – and Ianis Hagi ensured they cruised to their 28th win from 32 games this term.

Clips of the celebrations inside the Ibrox dressing room give a brief insight into just how revered the 40-year-old is by the blue side of Glasgow and how drastically he has improved morale since taking charge in 2018.

With contract uncertainty surrounding the likes of Roy Hodgson at Crystal Palace and the position of several other managers under scrutiny, Cascarino urged a Premier League club to take a chance on the Champions League winner.

He said: “If I was a Premier League chairman and I thought, ‘you know what, I’ve loved the way he has handled recruitment and how he has improved Glasgow Rangers’, I would want to be ambitious.

“You would go, ‘Could we be the first with our foot in the door, to find out if it was possible?’ It might be completely no chance.

“I imagine it would be difficult anyway, but that is the sort of ambition I would want from Palace.

“He might turn round and say, ‘No I have a big job to do at Rangers with Champions League football next season.’

“Look, they are not going to win the Champions League, are they Glasgow Rangers? They are going to be playing a part in it.

“I would be incredibly ambitious because I do believe Steven Gerrard will be Liverpool manager one day.”
