Rafael Leao almost scored a career highlight goal, but ended up embarrassingly flat on the turf.

The AC Milan winger was a constant threat throughout the first half against Newcastle in the Champions League, but there was one chance he won’t want to see again.

Played into space by Theo Hernandez in the 34th minute, he opted to take on Sean Longstaff inside the box and left the Magpies midfielder in his dust.

Just as everyone expected him to pull the trigger, Sven Botman arrived on the scene, but Leao left him for dead, before skipping past former teammate Sandro Tonali.

But, just as Newcastle were in full panic mode and expecting a shot, Leao instead went for a backheel, which he completely fluffed, kicking the turf and ending up on the floor.

Reacting to the chance on Twitter, one user wrote: “If Leao scored this it would’ve been the goal of the season wow.”

Another added: “Unbelievable. Rafael Leao could have had goal of the season there.”

The chance was one of Milan’s best in a first half full of shots on Nick Pope’s goal.

However, the Magpies held on to keep things 0-0 at half-time, and Leao could be made to regret his wasted opportunity.
