Salford City take on Wrexham for just the third time ever this weekend, but four of their co-owners have faced the Welsh side before.

That happened in a tasty FA Cup tie back in 1995, which saw the Red Dragons go up against them on an impressive cup run.

Now, those four former stars will face Wrexham again as co-owners of Salford when the two sides go head-to-head in League Two at the Race Course on Saturday, live on talkSPORT2.

Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes, Phil Neville and David Beckham were in Manchester United‘s squad as the Red Devils took on then-Division Two side – now known as League One – 28 years ago.

The sides met in the fourth round of the FA Cup, with Wrexham being awarded with a trip to Old Trafford after beating then-Premier League side Ipswich Town in the previous round.

Neville made his debut for the tie, whilst Giggs was five years into his senior career, Scholes had started playing for Sir Alex Ferguson’s side two years prior and Beckham was on the bench.

They were joined by Peter Schmeichel, Roy Keane, Paul Ince and Denis Irwin amongst others.

But despite their star-studded side, it was Wrexham who went 1-0 up in the tie, sending the travelling fans into raptures.

The late Kieron Durkan found the net in 10th minute, sticking the ball between Schmeichel’s legs to put his side in the lead.

Man United quickly hit back though, with Irwin finding the net seven minutes later before Giggs, Brian McClair, an Irwin penalty and a Wrexham own goal saw them go 5-1 up.

Wrexham did score a consolation goal in the 90th minute, but the Red Devils ran out victorious, sealing a 5-2 win.

Ferguson’s side reached the final that season but lost out to Everton as Paul Rideout scored a famous Wembley goal.

A lot has changed since the Salford co-owners took Wrexham on. Wrexham had 15 years in the National League to come before their Hollywood takeover. Likewise, Salford were yet to be invested in by the class of 92.

Salford currently sit 13th in the league, whilst Wrexham’s return to the fourth tier has seen them climb to seventh.

But just like 1995, League Two new boys Wrexham will be hoping they can prove they can compete despite being against the odds once again.
